Health in Five // Step-Ups: Build Strength, Balance and Stability

When it comes to building lower body strength, improving balance and strengthening your core, simple movements can make a big impact. In this Health in Five episode, Abby, a personal trainer at Sandy Shores Wellness Center, demonstrates a basic step-up exercise that challenges multiple muscle groups while supporting functional movement.

Step-ups are a low-impact exercise that helps strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and core while also improving coordination and stability. This movement mimics everyday activities like climbing stairs, making it a great addition to a well-rounded fitness routine.

How to Perform a Step-Up

To complete this exercise, you’ll need an elevated surface such as a low step, porch step or sturdy chair. If using a chair or another elevated surface, place it against a wall or fixed surface for added safety.

  1. Place one foot in the center of the elevated surface.
  2. Drive through your heel and the pinky-toe edge of your foot as you step up.
  3. Slowly lower yourself back down with control.
  4. Repeat on the opposite leg.

As you perform the movement, focus on keeping your knee aligned over your ankle and maintaining pressure through your heel. This helps engage your glutes and hamstrings while supporting proper form.

A Low-Impact Alternative to Lunges

If traditional lunges feel challenging or uncomfortable, step-ups can be a great alternative. They allow you to work through a greater range of motion while providing a more controlled, lower-impact option for strengthening your legs.

For best results, try completing 2–3 sets of 10–12 repetitions a few times throughout the week. As your strength and balance improve, you can gradually increase the challenge by adding height or resistance.

Remember, staying active doesn’t always require complicated movements. Small, consistent steps can help you build strength and confidence over time.

Keep moving one step at a time.
