  • Headaches

  • Neurological dysfunction

  • Post-surgical intervention
  • Jaw pain

Physical therapy

Physical therapy can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility. In many cases, expensive and risky surgical intervention can be avoided, and the need for long-term use of prescription medications—their side effects—can be lessened.

Physical therapy can help the patient prevent or manage his or her condition so that long-term health benefits can be achieved. Scheurer Hospital's physical therapists examine each individual and develop a treatment plan according to the patient's goals, such as promoting the ability to move, restoring function, reducing pain or preventing disability. Services include an individualized evaluation, patient-centered intervention using a variety of treatment techniques, and periodic re-evaluation of the progression toward meeting the client's goals.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy can help patients achieve independence in all areas of their lives. Patients work to restore independence with activities of daily living (ADLs) and work skills. Services include an individualized evaluation, patient-centered intervention using a variety of treatment techniques, and periodic re-evaluation of the progression toward meeting the client's goals.

Athletic training

Athletic training deals with physical fitness and treatment and the prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Athletic training professionals treat patients who participate in sports just for fun or who want to get better results from their exercise program, patients who suffered injuries and want to regain full function, and patients who have disabilities and want to increase their mobility and capabilities.

The Scheurer Hospital Rehabilitation Department also provides athletic training outreach to local high schools. The department's certified athletic trainer is available by appointment by calling 989.453.5217.

Treatments and services

Swim-Ex Resistance Pool

Scheurer Hospital has the only Swim-Ex Resistance Pool within a 50-mile radius. The principles of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and viscosity) provide physiological and clinical benefits to the patient. The aquatic therapy program may be chosen by your therapist to complement and accelerate your rehabilitation process.

Biodex Balance System SD

Scheurer Hospital is pleased to introduce the Biodex Balance System SD. This state-of-the-art balance unit is used for both testing and training during the rehabilitation of a variety of balance impairments. Documented feedback is provided to the patient, which compares his or her performance to peers in his or her age group. Most patients report noticing significant results within six to eight weeks utilizing a combination of conventional therapy methods with the Biodex Balance System SD.

Community fitness

Members of the community are welcome to come to the Rehabilitation Department to use the equipment during community fitness hours. A monthly pass can be purchased for $25, or a punch card can be purchased for $20.
