Chest Pain Isn’t Always Obvious — Know When to Seek Help
Chest pain or discomfort is one of the most common warning signs of a heart attack, but it doesn’t always happen the way many people expect.
In this episode of Health in Five, Carrie Monaghan, Assistant Director of Nursing at Scheurer Health - Harbor Beach explains that heart attack symptoms can vary from person to person. While some people may experience pressure, tightness or pain in the chest, others may notice symptoms in different areas of the body — including the arm, neck, jaw or back.
Other warning signs may include:
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Sweating
- Unusual fatigue
- A feeling that something just isn’t right
One of the most important things to remember: a heart attack does not always start with severe symptoms. In some cases, warning signs may seem mild at first, but getting care quickly can make a major difference.
If you experience symptoms that concern you, seek medical attention right away. Have someone drive you to the Emergency Department if possible, or call 911 if help is not immediately available.
At Scheurer Health — Harbor Beach, patients experiencing chest pain are evaluated quickly with tools such as an EKG, lab testing and continuous monitoring to help determine what is happening and begin the appropriate care as soon as possible.
When it comes to your heart, it is always safer to get checked.
Never ignore chest pain — recognizing the warning signs could save your life.
