My Job in 60 Seconds: Melissa Smith, MA

Before a doctor steps into the room, a Medical Assistant is often the first person a patient meets. They are the calming voice calling you back from the waiting room, the hands that take your vitals, record your medical history and make sure everything is ready for the provider.

Medical Assistants play a vital role in delivering efficient, compassionate care. They are the bridge between patient and provider, making sure every appointment starts smoothly and ends with the patient feeling cared for. Melissa Smith, MA, is proud to be one of our amazing team of MA's within Scheurer Health.

"For my job as a medical assistant, I do more clerical work, like scheduling testing for a patient and dealing with insurance but I feel it is very rewarding. I get the chance to help patients every single day. Patients may not realize that I will spend hours on the phone getting the authorizations they need for a test since insurance dictates whether or not they will have this test done.
If they can't get the authorizations, then the patient cannot have testing done, which results in them not getting the care they need. That's why I feel important in my role, to help patients receive the best possible care." -Melissa Smith, MA

This is part of our new series entitled "My Job in 60 Seconds" and features individuals from every corner of Scheurer Health's 20+ locations and 50+ departments.

It's our goal to shine a bright light on the individuals who make Scheurer Health so successful and your premier choice for healthcare in the Thumb of Michigan. We realize that without our team of 500+ healthcare professionals, Scheurer Health would be nothing more than a series of empty buildings scattered across Michigan.

With healthcare roles being so critical and frankly, sometimes complicated, you will find a version longer than just one minute above. On social media, such as our Facebook & Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn, you'll find the true-to-its-name 60-second version.
