Mental Health Awareness with Senior Life Solutions
Huron County Proclaims May as Mental Health Awareness Month
As we flip the calendar to June, we want to thank the Huron County Commissioners for declaring May as Mental Health Awareness Month! Our Senior Life Solutions staff took the initiative to make this happen for such an important topic.
Mental health conditions are common, manageable and treatable. One in five people experience a mental health condition in a year and about half of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their lives. For the majority of people, symptoms become apparent at age 14 and can be present at any age.
Services regarding mental health are a significant component of Senior Life Solutions at Scheurer Health. It is an outpatient program designed to meet the unique needs of older adults experiencing depression or anxiety related to life changes that are often associated with aging or a chronic diagnosis.

Below is Resolution #25-54C from the Huron County Commissioners, passed unanimously on Tuesday, May 13, 2025:
We, the Legislative Committee, respectfully beg leave to submit the following resolution for your consideration:
Whereas, mental health is essential to the overall health and well-being of every individual; and
Whereas, millions of Americans live with mental health conditions, and many face barriers to treatment, including stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to care; and
Whereas, Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to break the silence and raise awareness of the importance of mental health, while encouraging individuals to seek help when needed; and
Whereas, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Month 2025, “Strength in Connection,” highlights the vital role that community, support systems, and meaningful relationships play in mental well-being; and
Whereas, through education, advocacy, and the promotion of resources, we can foster an environment where everyone feels supported in their journey toward mental wellness; and
Whereas, it is crucial to recognize the diverse needs of all individuals, including
adolescents, older adults, veterans, and historically underserved populations, by ensuring equitable access to mental health care and support; and
Whereas, every person, organization, and community has a role to play in ending stigma, advancing mental health equity, and creating a culture where mental health is treated with the same priority as physical health; now
Therefore, be it resolved that the Huron County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaims the month of May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month in Huron County; and
Be it further resolved that this Board calls upon all citizens, businesses, schools, and community organizations to join us in this effort to prioritize mental health, promote understanding, and extend compassion to those affected by mental health challenges. Together, we can create a world where mental health is valued, understood, and accessible to all.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, here are some easy first steps:
- Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn more about mental health conditions, their signs, symptoms and treatment options. Understanding mental health can help reduce stigma and encourage seeking help when needed.
- Connect with Others: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups for emotional support and social connection. Talking about your feelings and experiences can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.
- Limit Screen Time: Take breaks from screens and technology, especially social media, which can sometimes contribute to feelings of inadequacy or comparison. Instead, spend time engaging in activities that nourish your mind and body.
- Build a Coping Toolbox: Creating your toolbox can be as simple as writing a list of what helps, like breathing exercises or going for a walk – this way when you start struggling with your mental health, you do not have to remember what to do or search for tips. You can also have a physical toolbox and fill it with things like a stress ball, written notes to yourself, and photos that make you happy.
