❤️ May is Stroke Awareness Month
Know the Signs, Save a Life
Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Every 3.5 minutes, someone dies from one. This May, during Stroke Awareness Month, we’re joining the American Stroke Association and healthcare partners nationwide to raise awareness about strokes, their warning signs and how they can be prevented.
What Is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells begin to die, sometimes within minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of death and serious long-term disability in the U.S.
How Can You Recognize a Stroke?
Quick recognition and response are critical. Use the F.A.S.T. acronym to remember the signs:
-
F – Face drooping
-
A – Arm weakness
-
S – Speech difficulty
-
T – Time to call 911
If you or someone around you shows any of these signs—even if they go away—get emergency help immediately.
5 Key Facts About Stroke:
- Stroke kills brain cells - Stroke happens when a clot or rupture interrupts blood flow to the brain. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells die.
- Types of stroke - Ischemic caused by a clot, Hemorrhagic caused by a rupture and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or “warning stroke” caused by a temporary blockage.
- About one in four stroke survivors is at risk for another - Fortunately, up to 80 percent of second clot-related strokes may be preventable.
- Prevention is key - Had a stroke? Work with your doctor to identify the cause and create a plan to prevent another. This may include managing high blood pressure, making healthy lifestyle choices and taking medications as recommended by your doctor.
What You Can Do This May:
-
Share the F.A.S.T. signs with family and friends
-
Encourage loved ones to manage stroke risk factors
-
Take 5 minutes to learn your own blood pressure
-
Support stroke survivors in your community
Stroke doesn’t discriminate, it can affect anyone at any time. But with education, early action and prevention, we can reduce the risk and impact of stroke in our communities.
Let’s work together this May to raise awareness and save lives.
