Health in Five // Romanian Deadlifts: Build a Stronger Lower Body
When it comes to lower body strength, the Romanian deadlift is one of the most effective movements. Ben Zaleski, personal trainer at Sandy Shores Wellness Center demonstrates this simple exercise that targets multiple muscle groups at once. A stronger lower body supports stability and mobility for everyday life.
Whether you're lifting groceries, climbing stairs or simply staying active, building strength in your hamstrings, glutes and lower back can make daily activities easier while helping reduce aches and pains as you age.
How to Perform a Romanian Deadlift
Begin by holding a dumbbell, or at-home item, in each hand with your feet about hip-width apart. Keep a slight bend in your knees and engage your core.
Next, hinge at your hips by pushing them backward while keeping your back flat throughout the entire movement. Lower the dumbbells until they reach about mid-shin level. Once you feel a stretch in your hamstrings, drive your hips forward to return to a standing position.
Tips for Proper Form
The movement should be slow and controlled. Focus on maintaining proper form rather than lifting heavy weight. For general strength and muscle development, perform three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions. Start with a weight you can control comfortably, then gradually increase resistance as you become stronger.
You can use an item at home (soup cans, water jugs), or even practice the movement using just your body weight to learn proper form before adding resistance.
Why This Exercise Matters
The Romanian deadlift strengthens your hamstrings, glutes and lower back—muscles that make up much of your posterior chain. These muscles play an important role in posture, balance and everyday movement.
Keeping these muscles strong can help:
- Improve lower body strength
- Support a healthy back
- Enhance balance and stability
- Make everyday tasks easier
- Help reduce the risk of injury as you age
Functional exercises like the Romanian deadlift don't just help you in the gym—they help you move better throughout your daily life.
