Health in Five // Reset Your Pain with Dry Needling
Health in Five // Dry Needling, Shawn Gallagher, DPT
At Scheurer Health, physical therapist Shawn Gallagher, DPT, is helping patients find relief through this innovative technique that blends principles of Eastern and Western medicine.
Dry needling is a therapeutic treatment that uses thin, solid filament needles—without medication or injections—to target areas of pain and dysfunction in the muscles. The “dry” simply means nothing is injected into the body.
How it Works
Dry needling creates a controlled, targeted response in the muscle tissue. This process helps:
- Increase blood flow
- Deliver oxygen and healing nutrients
- Stimulate the body’s natural recovery process
In simple terms, it helps “reset” the body’s response to pain and injury.
Whether you’re dealing with elbow pain, ankle discomfort or chronic muscle tightness, dry needling can help restore proper circulation and jumpstart healing—especially in areas that haven’t responded to other treatments.
During a session, your provider will:
- Clean and prepare the treatment area
- Insert very fine needles into targeted muscle tissue
- Allow time for the body to respond and activate healing
Multiple needles may be used depending on the area, and treatments are designed to support the body’s natural repair process—particularly for chronic conditions like tendonitis, tendinosis and long-standing muscle pain.
For many patients, dry needling not only relieves discomfort but also helps re-engage the body’s ability to heal itself more effectively over time.
