Health in Five // Hydration Tips to Beat the Heat

As temperatures rise and summer activities ramp up, staying hydrated becomes more important than ever. In this Health in Five segment, Ben Zaleski, Personal Trainer at Sandy Shores Wellness Center, shares simple hydration tips to help you stay healthy, energized and refreshed throughout the summer months.

Whether you're spending the day outdoors, exercising or simply going about your daily routine, drinking enough water can help you feel your best and support your overall health.

The challenge?

Many people are dehydrated without even realizing it. Common signs of dehydration can include headaches, fatigue and difficulty getting through workouts or other physical activities. Even mild dehydration can impact how you feel throughout the day.

A general rule of thumb is to drink about half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, someone who weighs 160 pounds should aim for approximately 80 ounces of water daily. If you're exercising, working outside or spending extended periods in the heat, you'll likely need even more to replace fluids lost through sweat.

Hydration Tips

Tip #1: Carry a Refillable Water Bottle

Having water readily available makes it much easier to stay hydrated throughout the day. Find a reusable water bottle you like and keep it with you wherever you go. A water bottle within reach serves as a simple reminder to drink more often.

Tip #2: Hydrate Before Activity

Don't wait until you're thirsty to start drinking water. If you know you'll be exercising, working outside or spending time in the heat, begin hydrating beforehand. Starting an activity already hydrated can help your body perform better and reduce your risk of dehydration.

Tip #3: Start Your Morning with Water

One of the easiest ways to build a hydration habit is to begin each day with a full glass of water. Drinking water first thing in the morning can help you start the day on the right foot and make it easier to reach your hydration goals throughout the day.

Make Hydration a Daily Habit

Staying hydrated doesn't have to be complicated. Small habits like carrying a water bottle, planning ahead and starting your day with water can make a big difference.

This summer, make hydration part of your daily routine so you can feel refreshed, energized and ready for everything the season has to offer.
