Health in Five // Could You Recognize a Heart Attack?

Heart attacks don't always look the way they're portrayed on television. While chest pain is a common symptom, warning signs can be subtle and vary from person to person—especially for women.

In our newest Health in Five video, Scheurer Health Emergency Department nurses Whitney Bischer, RN, BSN and Chad Hornbacher, RN, BSN discuss:

  • Common heart attack warning signs
  • Symptoms that are often overlooked
  • Risk factors and prevention tips
  • What patients can expect when they come to the emergency department

Knowing what to watch for and seeking emergency care without delay can help reduce damage to the heart and improve the chances of survival. That's why understanding the symptoms before an emergency occurs is so important.

Reducing Your Risk of Heart Attack

Many of the same healthy habits that protect your heart can also reduce your risk of heart attack. Managing blood pressure, controlling cholesterol, staying active, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco and following your provider's recommendations all contribute to better heart health.
