Health In Five // Cardiac Health, Alex Lurie, EP

Staying heart-healthy doesn’t require complicated routines. In this second feature, Alex Lurie, Exercise Physiologist at Scheurer Health Rehabilitation, explains how cardiac rehab and cardiovascular exercise help patients recover after heart events and build long-term heart strength.

Why Cardiac Rehab Matters

Cardiac rehab is a supervised exercise program designed for individuals recovering from heart attacks, stents, bypass surgery, or other cardiac procedures. It helps patients safely rebuild strength, improve endurance and regain confidence in daily movement.

Heart disease is responsible for 32% of deaths globally—but consistent movement and guided exercise can significantly reduce risk and improve outcomes.

Benefits of Cardiovascular Exercise

Cardiovascular exercise raises your heart rate and helps your body work more efficiently. Over time, it can:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve cholesterol levels
  • Reduce blood glucose
  • Support weight management
  • Strengthen heart function

Even simple activities like walking, biking, swimming or dancing can make a meaningful difference. The general recommendation is 150 minutes per week (about 30 minutes, 5 days a week).

How Cardiac Rehab Works

At Scheurer Health, cardiac rehab typically includes 30–36 supervised visits using equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, seated ellipticals, arm cranks and NuSteps.

Patients start with short intervals—often just a few minutes on multiple machines—and gradually increase duration and intensity, working toward longer, continuous exercise sessions of up to 45 minutes.

Small Steps = Healthier Heart

Structured rehab combined with consistent daily movement helps condition the heart to pump more efficiently and supports long-term recovery.

Even small, consistent steps toward movement can have a lasting impact on heart health and overall well-being.
