Health in Five // Build Strength with Chair Squats
Health in Five // Chair Squats, Abby Knoblock
Staying active doesn’t have to take a lot of time. With Health in Five, we’re bringing you quick, practical tips to support your health—in just minutes a day.
In this first feature, Abby Knoblock, personal trainer at Sandy Shores Wellness Center, demonstrates one of the most effective and accessible lower body exercises: the chair squat.
Benefits of Chair Squats
The chair squat is a simple, functional movement that helps strengthen your legs, improve balance and increase stability. It directly supports everyday activities like:
- Standing up from a chair
- Sitting down safely
- Maintaining independence and mobility
Because it uses a chair for support, it’s a great option for beginners or anyone looking for a safe, low-impact way to build strength.
How to Do a Chair Squat
Abby walks you through proper form to help you get the most out of this movement:
- Stand in front of a sturdy chair with feet shoulder-width apart
- Slowly lower yourself down, keeping your chest up and weight in your heels
- Lightly tap the chair, then stand back up with control
- Use the chair as a guide—not a place to fully rest
Focusing on controlled movement and proper alignment helps prevent injury and builds strength more effectively.
Small Steps, Big Impact
Start with: 10 repetitions, 3–4 times per day
As your strength and confidence improve, you can gradually increase your repetitions.
Exercises like the chair squat may seem simple, but they play a powerful role in maintaining strength, balance, and independence over time. Just a few minutes each day can make a meaningful difference in how you move and feel.
