Health In Five // Bench Dips for Everyday Strength
Health in Five // Bench Dips, Ben Zaleski
Staying active doesn’t have to require a gym or a long workout. In this feature, Ben Zaleski, personal trainer at Sandy Shores Wellness Center, demonstrates a simple and effective upper-body exercise you can do right at home: bench dips.
Using a couch, coffee table or even the bottom step of your stairs, this movement helps build strength in the triceps—the muscles along the back of your arms—while fitting easily into your daily routine.
Why Bench Dips Matter
Bench dips are a practical, accessible way to build upper-body strength without equipment. This exercise specifically targets the triceps, which play an important role in everyday movements like pushing, lifting and supporting your body weight.
Because bench dips use your own body weight, they can be easily modified based on your fitness level and completed in just a few minutes.
How to Perform Bench Dips
You only need a stable, low surface to get started.
Follow these steps:
- Position your hands on the front edge of a sturdy surface such as a couch or chair
- Walk your feet out in front of you so your body is hovering just off the edge
- Slowly lower your body by bending your arms to about a 90-degree angle
- Push back up to the starting position
Aim for 3 sets of 8–10 repetitions to feel an effective burn in the triceps.
Easy to Fit Into Your Day
One of the biggest advantages of bench dips is convenience. This exercise can be done almost anywhere and doesn’t require dedicated workout time.
Try incorporating them into your routine:
- During a TV commercial break
- Between daily tasks
- As part of a quick at-home workout
Even a few minutes of movement can help improve strength and overall wellness.
Building Strength Through Consistency
Getting started is often the hardest part. Bench dips are a great reminder that small, consistent efforts can lead to meaningful progress over time.
By adding simple exercises like this into your day, you’re taking an important step toward improving strength, supporting daily movement and maintaining long-term health.
