Dr. Walker // New Doc In Caseville

Dr. Walker // New Doc. New Digs.

With a smile that lights up the room and a passion for family medicine that’s as contagious as her enthusiasm, it becomes abundantly clear that Shelby Walker, MD is here to make a difference. Dr. Walker is our latest physician to join our Primary Care ranks and is joining Scott Reiter, DO and Paul Penfold, PA at the newly renovated and expanded Scheurer Primary Care – Caseville, starting in August of 2024.

Dr. Walker's journey to medicine began early when she made a bold declaration to her family at just the age of three: she was going to be a doctor. "I had terrible eczema, and I was sick of dealing with it at home and nothing seemed to be working. And I decided I was going to find a solution and be a doctor, and it just stuck," she laughed.

Her journey from that spirited declaration to joining Scheurer Health is a tale of dedication and passion. After completing her undergraduate studies at Central Michigan University and her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Dr. Walker pursued her residency in family medicine in Midland. "I chose family medicine partly because I just liked little pieces of almost everything," she explained. "I loved pediatrics but hated the goodbyes at age 18. I really wanted it where I could see the entire family from birth throughout their lives and build lasting relationships."

When Dr. Walker was at medical school at Michigan State University, she was a part of the rural medicine
track which gave her the ability to work in Midland for a few years then spend the rest of her time in the
Thumb at Scheurer Health.

“I actually got to spend a lot of time with a lot of the different doctors out here, especially the family medicine doctors. I loved the culture, the people and how welcoming the community was to me throughout that time. When it came to start thinking about where I wanted to end up for my practice, I decided I would love to come back here to where it all started.”

Dr. Walker’s first day at Scheurer Health is etched in her memory. "I started with Dr. Paul Scadden at Scheurer Primary Care - Sebewaing, and I remember him telling me, 'You know a lot more than you think. You can do this.' I spent my whole day with him and it was great. I left that day feeling a bit overwhelmed, but it was also amazing to see how much his patients cared about him and how much he cared for his patients and the relationship they had built within that rural practice,” Dr. Walker recalls, “I thought, yep, I like this place, I am going to be okay for my next two years while I’m out here.”

"Medical school and residency often felt like drinking from a fire hydrant," she jokes. "But at some point, you realize you enjoy the chaos and it becomes manageable. I’ve grown so much in confidence and knowledge, and I’m ready to bring that to my new patients."

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic shaped Dr. Walker’s residency experience but also strengthened her purpose. “The end of my third year of medical school into my fourth year of medical school was the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was actually with Dr. Ross Ramsey when we were pulled out of the
clinic because of COVID-19.” “It was interesting. There was a lot of uncertainty at the time, kind of what the future was going to hold, what family practice physicians were going to do, how medical students were going to survive throughout that pandemic time.”

“I feel like how we approached education changed. One of my first rotations back from COVID-19 was again with Dr. Ramsey and it was interesting to see how much things had changed. We went from going in and out of rooms, washing our hands, doing our daily tasks to here’s a mask and a gown and wipe every surface possible down. We would have to be cautious of every single cold, cough, flinch or sneeze.”
“I ended up graduating from medical school in the parking lot of the Breslin Center at Michigan State University because of the indoor guidelines. I graduated in the parking lot with my mom and dad sitting masked behind us in chairs and then I jumped right into residency.”

Dr. Walker is excited to begin her practice at Scheurer Primary Care - Caseville and is looking forward to providing quality healthcare to the residents of Caseville and the surrounding communities. "It's super exciting knowing that I'll be supported and able to grow as a physician and just as a person in general makes me really happy to be coming out here," she said.

Her approach to medicine is all about partnership and personalization. "I focus on the patient’s goals, whether it’s strict control of a condition or achieving the best quality of life," she says. "It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them reach their health goals."

The upcoming expansion and upgrades at Caseville’s Primary Care facility add to her excitement. "It’s thrilling to see Scheurer Health grow and to be part of a state-ofthe-art facility that reflects our commitment to the community," she says. Working alongside experienced colleagues like Dr. Scott Reiter and Paul Penfold, PA, Dr. Walker is eager to learn and grow. "They bring so much experience and have a great partnership. I can’t wait to learn from them and contribute to the team," she stated.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Walker is filled with gratitude and anticipation. "Each patient interaction, especially the challenging ones, reaffirms that I chose the right path. It’s those moments of connection and care that make it all worthwhile."
