Dr. Paul Ariagno // Neurology
Introducing Neurology to Scheurer Health with Paul Ariagno, MD
We are excited to introduce Paul Ariagno, MD as he will bring the field of Neurology to Scheurer Health. Dr. Ariagno brings over two decades of experience, a wealth of knowledge and a commitment to making a real impact in a community that will benefit from his expertise.
A neurologist is a medical doctor who diagnoses, treats and manages disorders of the brain and nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves). A neurologist knows the anatomy, function and conditions that affect your nerves and nervous system. Your nervous system is your body’s command center. It controls everything you think, feel and do — from moving your arm to the beating of your heart.
For Dr. Ariagno, choosing Neurology was something that came to him when he was going to school to become a psychiatrist. During his first year of training, he discovered how interesting it was working with the brain and found that Neurology was his calling.
“Neurology for me is very fascinating. It is puzzle solving which all medicine is, but neurology in particular is very heavy on history and trying to perform deductive reasoning. I like to be able to have that hands-on approach with patients.”
“Neurology is a field of the nervous system and it is something that is way beyond just the brain. It encompasses a wide range of issues within the nervous system, from the brain to the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Also, every day is different. I see people from ages 18 to 108, all with different issues, so I think it is very intriguing to have the variety.”
Dr. Ariagno’s upbringing led him to go into the medical field. With his father being a physician and his mother a nurse, he grew up in a medical family in the Chicago area. He has always had an affinity toward science, which naturally led to medicine. He practiced in Chicago in the 1990's until 2001 when he made the move to Holland, Michigan, practicing there for nearly 20 years. Wanting to move to a rural area to go back to being able to connect with patients, Dr. Ariagno was drawn to the Thumb and more specifically, Scheurer Health.
“It’s extremely exciting for me to be coming this way to Scheurer because I really want to make a difference. The team here is terrific and they are fully ready and able to support me. I think together we will make a big difference.”
