Babysitter Training // Building Confidence and Safety Skills for Local Youth

Scheurer Health Community Wellness recently hosted a full-day Babysitter Training course in partnership with the Safe Sitter® program, giving local youth hands-on experience and practical tools to become safe, confident and responsible babysitters.

18 local youth ages 11 to 14 participated in the interactive training, which focused on building essential safety, caregiving and leadership skills needed to support families in our community.

Hands-On Learning for Real-Life Situations

Throughout the day, participants engaged in hands-on learning designed to prepare them for real-life situations when caring for younger children. Youth learned critical safety skills including CPR basics and choking rescue techniques, helping them understand how to respond in emergency situations. The training also covered diaper changing, age-appropriate behaviors and child development stages so participants can better understand the needs of infants and children of different ages.

Building Safety and Problem-Solving Skills

The program emphasized problem-solving strategies, helping future babysitters learn how to handle common challenges such as conflict resolution, sibling dynamics and unexpected situations with confidence and calm decision-making. Participants also explored creative games and activities they can use to keep children engaged, active and safe while under their care.

Learning to Be a Professional Babysitter

In addition to childcare skills, the course included important personal safety topics such as staying safe when home alone, outdoor safety awareness and online safety practices. Youth also learned professional skills that can help them succeed as babysitters, including the importance of being punctual, considerate, communicating effectively with families and confidently discussing payment expectations.

At the conclusion of the training, participants received Safe Sitter® certificates recognizing their successful completion of the course and commitment to becoming responsible caregivers.

By the end of the day, participants left with practical knowledge, increased confidence and a stronger understanding of safety in our community—preparing them to provide responsible and reliable childcare support for local families.
