New sights with Ophthalmologist, Dr. Miranda Renfrow

0:00

Our new Ophthalmologist, Dr. Miranda Renfrow is bringing the latest advances in eye technology to Scheurer Primary Care - Bad Axe. Growing up in a small town in Southeastern Oklahoma, Dr. Renfrow envisioned big plans for herself whilst staying loyal to her rural roots. She found inspiration through her grandmother to find her career path of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Renfrow smiled as she told her touching story,

“My grandmother helped raise me before I started school, and she was kind of a renaissance women. She could grow anything, cook anything, sew anything, and build all sorts of things. When she began to lose her vision, it impacted every area of her life. Socially she became a little withdrawn because she was so used to being independent. That always stayed with me throughout my medical school training and that is why I chose ophthalmology”.

Dr. Renfrow did her medical school training at Oklahoma State University and had her residency at Michigan State University in Grand Blanc, Michigan. During her time in Michigan, she, along with her children, fell in love with the beauty that is Michigan. When she visited the Thumb for the first time, she felt right back at home.

“I had not been to the Thumb before, so when I got here, I couldn’t believe all the boxes that it had checked off on my list for my final destination. I just wanted to be in a rural area again here in Michigan and I’m close to the water and it just so happens that the culture here at Scheurer is remarkable”.

I’m a firm believer that a good culture with the employee translates into a good patient. The staff is very friendly, and I love seeing them interacting with patients even in the hallway, it’s those little things that make a big difference. I can hardly express how excited I am to be in this setting and starting this service from the ground up”.

Located in the Scheurer Primary Care - Bad Axe location, Dr. Renfrow and her staff will be able to offer a variety of different services with the best technology available. Services include treatments for conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and surgically treat some eyelid conditions.

“As an ophthalmologist, I get to do a lot of procedures which are huge advances in services that we can now provide to patients. Macular degeneration is a service that I wish my grandmother had access to. It does prevent blindness for a lot of people, and so many people have to have these injections for the rest of their life”

Dr. Renfrow has found that her skillset is best suited to a rural area where there is a lack of access to subspecialists. She is excited to be able to bring these surgeries and specialized procedures to a place that is central to the Thumb. “I think it's going to be a tremendous service for patients. I can't wait to get started.”

Dr. Renfrow will be seeing patients at Scheurer Primary Care - Bad Axe, along with minor procedures. More technical and complicated surgeries such as cataracts will take place on our main campus in Pigeon at Scheurer Health.
