Welcome Dr. Laurey Hanselman!

It never occurred to Dr. Laurey Hanselman when she graduated from Ubly High School that 29 years later she would be returning to the Thumb to practice medicine but that is exactly where she finds herself. And she couldn't be happier!

Having practiced medicine for the past 9 years in the Grayling area, with time prior spent in the Lansing and Suttons Bay areas, Dr. Hanselman felt a tug to return to her roots to be closer to family. The timing of her decision was ideal and an opening in the Scheurer Family Medical Center clinic was a perfect fit as she returns to the Thumb area.

Dr. Hanselman is board certified in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. She completed her Bachelor's, Masters and Medical Degrees from Michigan State University and her residency in the Lansing area. Growing up with a keen interest in science, she recalls as early as seven years old expressing to her family she wanted to be a doctor. "I thoroughly enjoy getting to know my patients and have a special interest in women's health, heart disease and diabetes," exclaimed Dr. Hanselman.

Dr. Hanselman and her husband Larry have a strong interest in land conservatory, an appreciation for nature and enjoy the antics of their black Labrador retriever, Otis. Both enjoy sailing which is an ideal fit for Larry - as a retired bio-medical engineer he is able to spend time as a tall ship captain (also known as a wooden boat schooner) during the months of May through October. "This allows time for me to work on my quilting," jokes Dr. Hanselman who also noted she is looking forward to decorating the clinic with a number of her quilts.

Returning to the Thumb area allows for more time to spend with her mother and step-father who reside in Minden City along with her siblings who reside in the Cass City, Ruth and Sandusky areas. “I have lots of nieces and nephews in the area that I am looking forward to being closer to also!”

"I'm anxious to get to know the patients and work with the medical staff and employees of Scheurer Healthcare Network. I have been impressed with the friendly environment and the solid reputation of Scheurer Hospital," shared Dr. Hanselman.

Scheurer Healthcare Network is pleased with Dr. Hanselman's decision to join our healthcare team. Dwight Gascho, President and CEO of Scheurer Healthcare Network, noted, “I’m especially pleased that Dr. Hanselman was born and raised in this part of Michigan. We are grateful she has chosen to bring her skills, experiences and expertise to Scheurer Hospital.”

Dr. Hanselman will begin seeing patients at Scheurer Family Medical Center in October.
