HISTORY
The “Meals on Wheels” program began because of the initiative of Mae Yackle who started the program in 1975 with the help of a government grant. When funds ran out, the community stepped in and the Interfaith Council of Church Women took over the program. Meals on Wheels originated prior to and is a separate program from the Human Development Commission supported program, “Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) available in Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac Counties.

THE MEAL
The spectacular lunchtime meals, made up of generous portions of a main entrée, vegetable, bread/roll, salad, dessert/fruit, and milk, have always been prepared by Scheurer Hospital’s Nutritional Services Staff. The conscientious staff take great care to observe portion size, special diets, and everyone’s unique preferences. Dietary supplements are available at no additional cost.

DELIVERIES
Meals are available strictly Monday through Friday only. Holiday deliveries will be made as long as the holiday falls on a week day.

Meals are delivered by volunteers within a 4 mile radius of the Pigeon area. Customers who live outside the designated area can have family or a willing friend pick up their meals. The program is very flexible and allows for multiple delivery options:
1. Customers can receive meals daily at lunch time Monday through Friday.
2. Multiple meals may be delivered on one day so daily deliveries do not have to be made.
3. Meals may be delivered only on selected days.

Please inquire for other options.
