Scheurer Healthcare Network Receives ‘Five Star Investor Award’ From the American Cancer Society
Bay City, MI, December 3, 2009 - The American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, Inc., is honored to announce Scheurer Healthcare Network has received the “Five Star Investor Award” and the “Five Star Community Investor Award” for its activities in fighting cancer on multiple fronts through the Society’s Workplace Solutions program.
These prestigious awards are given to work sites that are active in fighting cancer through the programs and services of the American Cancer Society. “Scheurer Healthcare Network is a leader in the fight against today’s number one health concern,” said Lynn Weaver, American Cancer Society Area Executive Director. “By investing their time and energy into preventing cancer, we will save more lives and see fewer cases of this disease that takes so much from so many.”

Scheurer Healthcare Network qualified for the Five Star Investor Award through its staff involvement in:
• Health and Wellness Communication by making the Healthy Living monthly electronic newsletter available to employees, use of the www.fightcancer.org website and internal publication use of cancer content with its cancer-related tips for employees in the employee newsletter.
• Prevention and Early Detection/Patient Navigation with promotion of the ACS website, www.cancer.org and toll-free 1-800-ACS-2345 (800-227-2345) number which supplies information to cancer patients, friends and family members at no cost.
• Advocacy by responding to “Action Alerts” issued by the ACS Cancer Action Network in response to legislative action items such as Smokefree Michigan and Healthy Michigan Fund.
• Employee Wellness by offering cancer-related screenings, following healthy Meeting Well guidelines and promoting tobacco cessation information and help to employees.
• Sponsoring a very active and dedicated Relay For Life team.
• Smokefree Worksite – enabling all employees to work in a safe and healthy workplace.
• Tell A Friend – participated in a lifesaving program designed to help increase breast cancer screenings and early detection through regular mammograms. Over 100 local women were contacted about mammograms through the program.
• Volunteerism – through active involvement in the Relay For Life planning committee.
• Active for Life – a 10-week physical activity program designed to lessen cancer risk, promote team building and control healthcare costs.

Scheurer Healthcare Network also received the Five Star Community Investor Award by:
• BCCCP – (Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program) referred eligible uninsured and underinsured women to the cancer screening program that is offered in partnership with the Department of Community Health in Michigan and Indiana.
• Linked Scheurer Healthcare Network website with the American Cancer Society website, www.cancer.org.
• Cancer-related Screenings offered to the community at low cost and no cost at the annual health fair.
• Celebrating Cancer Survivors through Relay For Life and other community efforts.
• Quality of Life – I Can Cope support program offered to cancer patients and family members.
• Tobacco Prevention and Cessation – due to one third of all cancers being tobacco related, anti-tobacco education to youth on the dangers of smoking and chewing is an important part of what Scheurer Healthcare Network the community. Sixth graders in our area learn about smoking during the Pumpin’ for Life program.
• Road to Recovery is a program where cancer patients can be referred to resources that will help supply rides to chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments.
• Survivor Outreach has helped ensure that all cancer patients in the area have access to information, resources and programs. An important part of the program is helping increase awareness of American Cancer Society support resources.
