The Rehabilitation Department also houses Scheurer Hospital's Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab Services.

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility. In many cases, expensive and risky surgical intervention can be avoided, and the need for long-term use of prescription medications—their side effects—can be lessened.

Physical Therapy can help the patient prevent or manage his or her condition so that long-term health benefits can be achieved. Scheurer Hospital's Physical Therapists examine each individual and develop a treatment plan according to the patient's goals, such as promoting the ability to move, restoring function, reducing pain or prevent disability. Services include an individualized evaluation, patient-centered intervention using a variety of treatment techniques, and periodic re-evaluation of the progression toward meeting the client's goals.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy can help patients to achieve independence in all areas of their lives. Patients work to restore independence with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and work skills. Services include an individualized evaluation, patient-centered intervention using a variety of treatment techniques, and periodic re-evaluation of the progression toward meeting the client's goals.

Athletic Training

Athletic training deals with physical fitness and treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Athletic training professionals treat patients who participate in sports just for fun or who want to get better results from their exercise program, patients who suffered injuries and want to regain full function and patients who have disabilities and want to increase their mobility and capabilities.

The Scheurer Hospital Rehabilitation Department also provides Athletic Training outreach to local high schools. The department's Certified Athletic Trainer is available by appointment by calling 989.453.5217.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is an educational program designed to promote positive health habits among individuals who have had or are at high risk for heart disease. Through exercise, education and encouragement, the goals of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program are to reduce each patient's risk for complications related to cardiovascular disease and to help each regain an optimal level of wellness.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each session is supervised by a variety of healthcare professionals, and all exercise sessions are individually prescribed by the staff. A physician referral is required for admission. Once your physician has ordered Cardiac Rehabilitation, please call 989.453.4463 to arrange an appointment.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program for patients with chronic lung disease, such as COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma or pulmonary fibrosis. Chronic lung disease is an ongoing problem that keeps people from breathing normally, making it difficult to do things that used to be easy, such as going shopping, climbing stairs and keeping up with the grandkids. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program that teaches patients how to live and breathe better and improve their overall health and strength. The program includes exercise to help increase endurance and strength; education about lung disease, respiratory medications and preventing infection; and breathing techniques to help do daily activities with less shortness of breath.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Exercise sessions begin at 8:30 am, 10:30 am and 1 pm. Initial visits are scheduled by the coordinator. These include an assessment and development of an individualized treatment plan. The program is run by a Registered Respiratory Therapist, Registered Nurse and an Exercise Physiologist. A physician serves as the Medical Director for the program. Pulmonary Rehabilitation does require a physician's order and typically lasts six to 12 weeks.
